Alber Tabanao, also known as Kapitan, is a Filipino pop visual artist based in Parañaque. He graduated from the Technological University of the Philippines with a degree in Fine Arts. Showcasing familiar playful icons, mixed with his characters such as ‘Goybot’, Kapitan uses his art to reminisce the happiness and contentment he felt during his childhood — to which he hopes his viewers can relate. Kapitan started his professional career as an artist while he was still a student. Making pieces during his online classes gave him a head start in the art industry. Starting in 2021, Kapitan has held numerous exhibitions in local galleries in the Philippines, as well as international exhibitions in Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, France, and Dubai — with collectors reaching Netherlands, London, and Italy. “I consider my style in pop culture surrealism, and my usual concept is childlike characters and especially my robot character named Goybot, the reason is i like to reminisce how happy and content my childhood life. I want to share to my viewer how I view things and I want them to somehow relate to my stories.”
